Death by GPS
Salvatore Vitale
Salvatore Vitale in Death by GPS examines how biases in automation impact relationships between individuals, labor, and social structures, resulting in new forms of exploitation. The first part of the work draws parallels with historical struggles of the working class against machines, focusing on the region of Gauteng, South Africa, and the connection between the gig economy, mining industry, and technological sabotage. The project is a story that spans from the depths of South African gold mines to the rooms of freelancers, where the technological age is unfolding. Death by GPS takes on a transmedia narrative format that incorporates documentary, fiction, and generative storytelling with the involvement of various freelancers hired through online gig platforms to create content. The project has been presented for the first time at MAST Bologna in 2023.
